Our Treatments and Services

Nail care at Woodley St Podiatry, Reading

Foot Care Services

From general foot care to cryosurgery, we offer a wide range of foot care services. Our general foot care services include corn removal, callus removal, nail cutting and foot massage. If you have warts or verrucae, then cryosurgery could be the best solution for you. Cryosurgery is a foot treatment technique, which involves freezing the affected part of the feet. It can also be used for other conditions, such as bursa and neuroma.

Routine Foot Treatment

Includes an initial assessment of your foot and identifies any parts of the feet which may become problematic.

All nails are tidied and shaped with the treatment of common nail problems such as thickened, discoloured, fungal and ingrown nail (with a local anaesthetic, if necessary).

Any hard skin will be gently reduced and corns removed. Advice will be given on how to prevent future problems. You will be advised as to whether continued routine foot care is the best treatment plan for your feet. We would usually see our patients every 6-8 weeks or as necessary.

Corns, Calluses and Hard Skin Treatment

Corns and calluses are thickened areas of the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure or rubbing (friction) on the skin, usually caused by poorly fitting shoes.

Diabetic Foot Assessment

If you have high blood sugar or diabetes, then it may affect the lower limbs and feet in many ways. Hence, we recommend that you to book a regular assessment of your feet. We can monitor the health and condition of your feet by carrying out proper diabetic foot screening. You can also count on us to provide you with expert advice on maintaining healthy feet. If needed, we can also offer quality orthotics or inserts according to your needs.

Biomechanical Assessments

We have a wealth of experience in biomechanical assessments for foot problems. The objective of biomechanics in foot care is to restore, preserve or develop the function of the foot as well as their associated structures. By accessing the joints in your feet and legs, we can diagnose and manage various common foot problems.

Cracked Heel Treatment

Cracked heels can be extremely painful and occur where the skin has become dry or has experienced excessive pressure. To prevent them, moisturise regularly. If the problem worsens, see us for treatment as some severe cases require strapping of the cracks for the feet to heal.

Ingrowing Toenail Treatment

An ingrown toenail develops when the sides of the toenail grow into the surrounding skin. The nail curls and pierces the skin, which becomes red, swollen and tender. The toe also feels painful when pressure is placed on it. The big toe is most likely to be affected either on one side or both the sides.

Verruca & Warts Treatment

Verrucae are one of the most common foot problems among children and adults.

Warts are small, rough growths caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Any area of your skin can be affected, but warts are most commonly found on your hands, feet and face. Warts on the soles of your feet are known as verrucae and are also caused by HPV. The length of time it takes for a wart to disappear will vary from person to person.

In all cases, it is necessary to attend for an initial consultation where the severity of the verrucae are assessed to determine the most appropriate treatment.

Our podiatrists at Woodley St Clinic – Podiatry can remove overlying hardened skin to relieve discomfort. You will then be advised as to whether a course of treatments would help in reducing the verrucae. We generally advise a course of treatment with a strong acid such as salicylic acid or cryotherapy such as liquid nitrogen. If this is the case, most patients attend on a fortnightly basis to ensure effective results from the treatment. If you have a more persistent verruca which has been resistant to other therapies, we can also offer verrucae needling or LLLT.

Athlete’s foot

The medical name for athlete’s foot is tinea pedis, is a common condition caused by fungus. It normally begins between the toes and commonly occurs in people whose feet have become very sweaty while confined within tight-fitting shoes.

An itchy red rash develops in the spaces between your toes. As well as being itchy, the skin in the affected area may be scaly, flaky and dry.

Signs and symptoms of athlete’s foot include a scaly rash that usually causes itching, stinging and burning. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be spread via contaminated floors, towels or clothing.

Athlete’s foot is closely related to other fungal infections such as ringworm and jock itch. It can be treated with over-the-counter anti-fungal medications, but the infection often recurs. Prescription medications also are available.

Bunions

A bunion is a bony deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe. The main sign of a bunion is the big toe pointing towards the other toes on the same foot, which may force the foot bone attached to it (the first metatarsal) to stick outwards.

The medical name for this toe deformity is hallux valgus. It can change the shape of your foot and cause swelling, pain and tenderness around the big toe.

Wearing tight, narrow shoes might cause bunions or make them worse. Bunions can also develop as a result of the shape of your foot, a foot deformity or a medical condition, such as arthritis. Smaller bunions (bunionettes) can develop on the joint of your little toe.

We advise you to contact us, if you are suffering from bunion and we can help you.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis means inflammation of your plantar fascia. Your plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue (like a ligament) that stretches from your heel to your middle foot bones.

It supports the arch of your feet and also acts as a shock absorber in your feet.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common orthopedic complaints. Your plantar fascia ligaments experience a lot of wear and tear in your daily life. Too much pressure on your feet can damage or tear the ligaments.

The plantar fascia becomes inflamed, and the inflammation causes heel pain and stiffness.
